# Monthly plans

> Sell a plan that renews every month: who can create one, how your site sells it, what renewals do to your balance, and how a plan is cancelled or refunded.

A **plan** is a product that renews every month. Someone subscribes once and is
charged the same amount every month until the plan is cancelled. Everything else
you sell stays a one-time product.

<Tip>
  Ask your agent to "sell a \$24 a month membership". It creates the plan, adds
  the Subscribe button to your site, and puts the paid pages behind sign-in.
</Tip>

## Who can create a plan

Creating a plan needs the **Founder** tier on your NanoCorp account. One-time
products are unaffected and keep selling on every tier, including Light. On any
other tier the plan is refused and your agent tells you why.

## How a plan is sold

A plan is sold from your business's own site, behind
[Sign in with NanoCorp](/user-auth). A plan has no copyable buy link, because
every subscription belongs to the person who signed in.

Your agent builds two pieces:

* a **plan page** with a Subscribe button, shown to a visitor who is signed in;
* a **members-only area** that only paying subscribers can open.

A plan's payment address opened on its own does not work. The visitor sees a
page that sends them back to your site to subscribe from there.

## What the buyer sees

<Steps>
  <Step title="Your plan page">
    They sign in with a NanoCorp account and press Subscribe.
  </Step>

  <Step title="The payment page">
    It carries your business's name, the price, and the fact that it renews
    every month. Their email address is already filled in.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Back on your site">
    They land on your site again and the members-only area opens.
  </Step>
</Steps>

We email them a receipt for the first charge and for every renewal. The receipt
carries a link to their billing page, where they change the card or cancel.

## What renewals mean for you

* Every paid month lands in your business's balance, exactly like a sale.
* The withdrawal terms are the same as for a sale, with the same 20% fee. See
  [Withdrawals](/withdrawals).
* The **Money** tab lists renewals next to your one-time sales, with a monthly
  total of everything that renews on its own.
* The **Products** tab lists your subscribers under your products, with their
  status and the date of their next charge.

## Cancelling

* **The subscriber** cancels from their billing page, reached from "Manage
  plan" on your site or from the link in their receipt.
* **You** cancel a subscriber from the **Products** tab, or by asking your
  agent.

A cancellation always takes effect at the end of the month already paid for.
They keep their access until then, and nothing more is charged after that.

## Refunds

You can refund a renewal from the **Money** tab, the same way you refund a
one-time sale. Refunding one month does not end the plan: the subscription
keeps running unless you cancel it as well.

## Pausing and stopping a plan

Pausing a product, or closing your checkout, stops **new sign-ups only**. Your
current subscribers keep their access and keep paying you every month, and the
plan row tells you how many keep renewing. The same holds when your NanoCorp
plan ends and your shop goes dormant.

Switching down to the Light plan is the exception. Light keeps one business
live, and that business keeps its subscribers. If you have more than one live
business, the ones you do not keep live are paused **and stop billing**: their
subscribers keep access until the end of the month already paid for, and
nothing is charged after that. Pick the business you keep live with that in
mind.

To stop a plan for good, cancel the subscribers who are still on it, then stop
selling it. Until they are all cancelling, stopping the plan is refused and you
are told how many are left. Archiving the business follows the same rule.

## Testing a plan

Every plan row has a **TEST LINK**. Press it, open the link, and pay with the
test card **`4242 4242 4242 4242`** (any future expiry, any CVC, any ZIP). You
subscribe to your own plan as yourself, so you can walk the whole flow.

* A test subscription is marked **TEST** in your subscriber list. It never
  counts toward your revenue, your subscriber count or your monthly total.
* Pressing **TEST LINK** again replaces your previous test subscription, so you
  can test again after changing the price.

See [Testing your checkout](/testing-payments) for the rest of the test flow.

## What is not available yet

* Yearly plans, and any cadence other than monthly.
* Free trials.
* Moving a subscriber between two of your plans. They cancel one and subscribe
  to the other.
* Seats, or more than one of the same plan per person.
